I love this image! The thing I love most about it, is that you can almost see what it is, but your eyes can quite make it out. This happens to be the inside of the Hope Town Lighthouse on Elbow Cay in the Bahamas. In 2016, before Hurricane Dorion wiped out the Abacos, we had the amazing opportunity to take a sailing trip with our scout troop. We visited a number of Cays in the area. Elbow Cay was my favorite, it reminded me of growing up in New England. While we were at Elbow Cay we walked around the Hope Town, did a little shopping, and visited the lighthouse.
To our amazement we were allowed to climb to the top of the lighthouse and go out on the balcony that circles the top just below the actual light. The view from the balcony was just breathtaking! Hope Town Lighthouse is the only kerosene powered, hand cranked lighthouse left the in world. Fortunately, Hope Town Lighthouse survived Hurricane Dorian in 2019, just as it has survived the ravages of Mother Nature since it began operation in 1863. Ironically when the lighthouse was being built the locals were against it's construction. The local economy was boosted by ships running aground on the surrounding reef, and seeking repairs in Hope Town.
